About Dr Carl Bescoby
PhD, MSc, BSc, CPsychol, HCPC
- Psychologist - Practitioner - Educator - Researcher -
I am a psychologist with 10+ years of experience working at the intersection of injury, pain, health, wellbeing, and performance supporting injured athletes and active individuals with their rehabilitation, pain management and recovery journeys.
Back in 2014 I identified the need to support individuals going through substantial change in their lives whether that was injury, illness, or major setbacks and I found that there was a lack of psychological tools and support to help this change.
I support injured athletes and active individuals in navigating recovery in a way that fosters growth, helping them return not just physically ready, but mentally stronger, more resilient, and deeply confident in themselves. I believe that within every setback is a drive to learn, evolve, and move closer to their untapped potential.
I also support physiotherapists and organisations to psychologically inform their environments so that they feel better equipped to navigate the emotional and psychological side of injury for their clients and teams.
My Philosophy & Approach
- Psychological Flexibility - Self-Compassion - Solution Focused -
My approach is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion-Focused Therapy, applied in a way that meets athletes/active individuals where they are. I aim to understand each individual through a person-centred, relational lens shaped by the realities of injury, recovery and performance.
I’m not here to eliminate difficult thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations, but to help you notice them, understand them, and change how you respond to them so they no longer hold you back.
Together, we build the internal tools needed to support meaningful progress, guiding you towards actions that align with your values as an athlete/active person and as a human being. I believe the capacity for change already exists within you, my role is to help you access and strengthen it.
My goals are clear: 1. Create meaningful, positive experiences throughout recovery. 2. Strengthen self-compassion during rehabilitation. 3. Build psychological flexibility to handle the demands of injury and recovery. 4. Support a proactive mindset to help reduce future setbacks.
